Miners memorial at Audley
Cheryl Pritchard, the Regeneration Assistant from the Aspire Group, has informed the Society that the Miners Memorial wheel has been moved from its original location at Church Bank to a new site on Church Street. She is looking to do a launch event towards the end of February or in early March. The event will involve a memorial service and a mixture of memories, hymns and readings. Cheryl is appealing for anyone who is willing to share their experiences of the mines or of relatives of those who perished in one of the many disasters. It will be great if you would share your experiences at the memorial.

Questions about Audley
Nigel Tringham gave a talk at the
January meeting and has a few questions about some of the buildings in Audley.
Nigel is compiling the information for the Victoria County History book due to
be published this year.
1. Market Hall on corner of main road north of the church. There were plans to build this in 1892 but the building itself may not be before 1900; I cannot see any date on the outside, but perhaps there is a plaque with date and further information inside the building? How long was it used as a market hall? When was it closed?
2. Sewage works (in Alsager Road?). I think that this dates from the early 1920s, but I have also seen a date 1931/2 (but perhaps that refers to an extension?).
3. Halmerend? Settlement? I've come across a reference to a Settlement at Halmerend in the 1930s. This sounds like a specialised housing development, but I'm not sure where it could be, and Harrowby's connection is puzzling!
4. Village Hall at back of car park by former castle site. When was this opened. And did it replace an earlier building elsewhere in the village?
5. Library in Hall Street. Built in 1966, I think, and still open?
6. Pensioner's Hall south of the church. Opened in 1979, I think, according to a plaque. Was this built by the NHS (in connection with the health centre), or by the council, or another body? What goes on there?
7. Nursing home opposite the church. When was the former vicarage converted into the present nursing home, and when was the addition to the north built?
If you have the answers please contact Nigel by e-mail at n.j.tringham@his.keele.ac.uk
Padded envelopes
If anyone has used padded envelopes that they no longer require it would be appreciated if they could please bring them into a meeting or talk, or alternatively hand them to any committee member. This helps us to keep our postage costs down.
1910 Land Survey Tax
In 1910 a survey of Audley was carried out to record all the land in the Parish. It you would like to help in this project please contact Roger Wood at the next meeting.
