20 seats on the Borough Council were contested and the turnout for this election was 28.77%. The new make-up of the 60 seat authority is as follows: Labour 29, Liberal Democrat 18, Conservative 12, Caring Party 1.

I am pleased to report that our rural villages showed some of the highest turnouts in the local elections held on Thursday 2nd May 2002.

   Audley & Bignall End 41.2% elected Boden, Cornes, Wemyss
   Halmerend 44.2% Becket, Webb
   Madeley 40.7% Howells, Sinnott
   Talke 35.8% Amos, Slater
   Silverdale 27.7% Leech, Maddox
   Chesterton 23.0% Billington, Caddy, Phillips
Newcastle Council consists of 29 Labour, 10 Conservative, 18 Liberal Democrats (as at 02:01 on 03/05/02 but there is a by-election pending
